My grandmother’s simple recipe for country white bread. This rustic, thick bread has the perfect texture and flavor. Create in a breadmaker or oven.

We love handmade bread, whether it’s wheat bread or sandwich buns. Today’s conversation is on traditionally baked bread!

Prep Time: 1 Hour 15 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Total Time: 1 Hour 55 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp butter softened
  • 3 1/3 cups bread flour
  • 2 tbsp dry buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt

Instructions:

  1. Fill the bowl of a stand mixer with warm (95 to 115 degrees) water. Give the yeast a few minutes to activate once you sprinkle it on top of the water. The other ingredients should then be added to the mixing bowl. Mix the ingredients with the paddle attachment until they are barely mixed and thoroughly wet. Next, remove the paddle attachment and put the dough hook in its place. For five to seven minutes, knead the dough at medium speed.
  2. Put the dough in a basin that has been buttered, and then wrap it in plastic. Allow it to rise for about 30 minutes, or until it has doubled in size, in a warm location. Punch down the dough.
  3. Take the dough ball, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a loaf pan that has been buttered. and let it to rise once more for roughly 25 more minutes.
  4. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until golden brown, at 375 degrees. Ten minutes after cooling in the pan, transfer the bread to a wire rack to finish cooling.
