If you love apple pie, you’ll love this easy stovetop filling! This recipe is perfect for canning at home, and it’s even better loaded into a homemade pie crust.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 7 minutes
Total Time: 12 minutes
Ingredients:
- 4 medium apples
- â…“ cup sugar
- 3 tbsp water
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp + 1 tsp cornstarch
- 2 tbsp water
Instructions:
- Apples should be peeled, cored, and chopped or sliced.*
- Melt the butter and cinnamon in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Combine the apples, sugar, and water in a mixing bowl.
- Cover and cook for 4-6 minutes, or until very little softened, stirring periodically.
- Combine cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water in a small dish. Cook, stirring constantly until the apples are tender (but not mushy) and the filling has thickened.
- Allow 1 minute for the bubbles to form. Cool.
Notes:
Apples should be cut into half-inch cubes or 1/4-inch slices. Depending on the apple variety, cooking time may be reduced (or increased). Cook until the apples are soft and crisp, testing with a fork halfway through.
Some apples have a higher level of juiciness than others. Combine 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon water if you want your filling to be thicker. While the mixture is boiling, add a bit at a time until you reach the required consistency.
