Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Skillet (for frying) or baking sheet (for baking)
  • Spatula
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken or finely shredded cooked chicken
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs use gluten-free if needed
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped bell pepper optional
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika optional for a smoky flavor
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped (or 1 tablespoon dried)
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil for frying
  • Lemon wedges and your choice of sauce for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Chicken Mixture:

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground or shredded chicken, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, chopped onion, bell pepper (if using), minced garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and parsley. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

Form the Cakes:

  • Take a portion of the chicken mixture and shape it into a patty, about 1/2 inch thick. Repeat with the remaining mixture. You should get about 6-8 cakes, depending on the size.

Chill (Optional):

  • For firmer cakes, you can chill the patties in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before cooking.

Cook the Chicken Cakes:

  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the chicken cakes to the skillet without overcrowding.
  • Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F/74°C).

Serve:

  • Serve the chicken cakes hot with lemon wedges and your choice of sauce, such as aioli, tartar sauce, or a simple yogurt-based sauce.

Enjoy:

  • Enjoy your homemade chicken cakes as a main dish with a side of salad, steamed vegetables, or as part of a larger meal.

Notes

  • For a healthier version, bake the chicken cakes at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes instead of frying.
  • Add-ins like cheese, different herbs, or spices can enhance the flavor.
  • If using leftover cooked chicken, ensure it's finely shredded for the best texture.
  • These cakes can be frozen before or after cooking for easy meal prep.
